In Indonesia, BNSP (National Professional Certification Agency) is a state institution that has the authority to issue various professional certifications, including heavy equipment mechanics.

In practice, BNSP appoints various Professional Certification Institutions (LSP) which are deemed feasible to carry out testing while providing competency certificates to heavy equipment mechanics for certain competencies in accordance with the Indonesian National Work Competency Standards (SKKNI).

On the other hand, many companies own heavy equipment that has various types of heavy equipment from various brands. These heavy equipment must be handled by a limited number of mechanics. Often one mechanic can handle several machines at once. In fact, we know that each machine has different characteristics.
Here a mechanical ability is needed to understand the characteristics of each heavy equipment along with how to do periodic maintenance and make repairs.

Di sisi lain, banyak perusahaan-perusahaan pemilik alat berat yang memiliki beragam jenis alat berat dari berbagai merek. Alat-alat berat ini harus ditangani oleh mekanik-mekanik yang terbatas jumlahnya. Seringkali satu orang mekanik bisa menangani beberapa alat berat sekaligus. Padahal, kita mengetahui setiap alat berat memiliki karakteristik yang berbeda-beda.

Di sini diperlukan kemampuan mekanik untuk memahami karakter-karakter masing-masing alat berat beserta cara melakukan maintenance berkala serta melakukan perbaikan-perbaikan.

Banyak perusahaan yang memiliki pemahaman yang keliru tentang kompetensi mekanik. Mekanik dianggap cukup mengandalkan pengalaman maupun training-training saja. Padahal seperti profesi-profesi lain, profesi mekanik alat berat pun memiliki standar kompetensi.

Standar kompetensi ini berbeda-beda bergantung pada standar yang diterapkan masing-masing merek alat berat. Masalah akan mulai dirasakan manakala mekanik harus menangani beragam jenis dan merek alat berat. Di sinilah pentingnya sertifikasi bagi seorang mekanik.

Dengan memiliki sertifikasi standar, mekanik memiliki kemampuan standar untuk menyelesaikan berbagai pekerjaan yang kurang lebih sama. Misalnya, dalam melakukan perbaikan engine, mekanik dapat mengerjakan pekerjaannya sekalipun dengan engine yang berbeda-beda merek dan kapasitasnya.

Di Indonesia, BNSP (Badan Nasional Sertifikasi Profesi) adalah sebuah lembaga negara yang memiliki kewenangan untuk menerbitkan sertifikasi berbagai profesi, termasuk mekanik alat berat.

Dalam prakteknya, BNSP menunjuk berbagai Lembaga Sertifikasi Profesi (LSP) yang dianggap layak untuk melakukan pengujian sekaligus memberikan sertifikat kompetensi kepada mekanik-mekanik alat berat untuk kompetensi tertentu sesuai dengan Standar Kompetensi Kerja Nasional Indonesia (SKKNI).
